By committing to a year, you are agreeing that you will be a member and do payments for at least a year. After the year is completed, you are still a member and unless you make a positive action to put an end to the contract, the payments will continue to be requested. Since you are no longer under the year long obligation, you are free to cancel your membership at any time without an additional "buyout" fee. So march right in there and do so, explaining that your year is up and you have the law on your side if they try to convince you otherwise (of course, you should read the contract before doing this, in case there is some other arrangement you ended up agreeing to).
