Should weight be taken off the springs, shocks and suspension when storing a car for the winter?

This is more to protect your tires than the suspension system itself. For a winter period, you shouldn't have any problems just over-inflating the tires to the maximum. But if you plan on more than a seasonal storage, strongly consider using jack stands. Consult your owner's manual to find the proper locations for the stands; this will prevent chassis warpage and possible injury, since the car can fall off the stands if not placed properly.
