Unless your excuse is something that could feasibly happen more than once, your teacher will be much more likely to realise you're not telling the truth. You'll probably get a zero on the assignment, but a particularly strict teacher might even call your parents or give you a detention. You might never be able to excuse yourself from homework set by this teacher again, so it's best to knuckle down and get any future assignments finished ahead of time. Then, you won't have to make any more excuses in the first place.
