To safely introduce a transitional item, let your baby play with their lovey during the day to make sure they're able to move it around. Also, do lots of tummy time so your baby is able to push themselves up and move around a little, and use a gauzy, muslin toy that's very breathable. Finally, dress your baby in pajamas that won't restrict their movement, and don't have anything else in the crib beside your baby and the lovey.
