Buy the best you can afford. There are many to choose from, and everyone has their own idea of what the best is. A good quality stainless steel knife will last for a lifetime and beyond if properly cared for. Buy your knives individually for specific uses rather than as a part of a set. And only buy the knives you'll actually use.
