I recommend always wearing a plain cummerbund. It looks the most elegant, and it's one of those situations where choosing the plain option will get you noticed. In fact, I would only suggest a brightly-colored cummerbund when it's a request from a bride or groom, or you're going to a party with a dress code that is open to interpretation.
