If it's physically possible for the two dogs to mate, then it's possible for the female to become pregnant. However, the larger the male dog, the greater the risk of difficulty giving birth, as the puppies will be relatively over-sized compared to the female's birth canal. If the aim is to produce a designer dog, then the male should always be the smaller of the two purebreds, for this reason.
