The chlorine in my saltwater pool is very high but the pool store told me to add stabilizer. Why?

Odds on that by the time I finish typing this answer your chlorine (FC) level will be much lower. Your FC level will be reduced by sunlight or it will be broke down by day-to-day use of the pool. The stabilizer will, however, help "tame" the FC and make it less harsh, but it won't lower the levels. Do a search for the FC/CYA ratio and you may further understand how stabilizer and chlorine work together.
