I have a fixed, chipped male cat. At 7 months, he ran out and was gone for 5 weeks. What would you suggest to get him used to being outside some, but not running away?

It's a good idea to let even an indoor cat get their bearings outside, in case one day they get shut outside by accident. A harness is a good idea, as this keeps you in control. Take the cat out on a harness and just let him sniff the local area so he learns some scent landmarks. Do this each day for several weeks. If things go well and you are considering letting him out without a harness, then do this when he is hungry, so you can rattle the biscuits to get him back in.
