It depends on what is causing the sore throat. Viral sore throats are usually gone within 5-7 days, though a sore throat due to mononucleosis (mono) can take longer. Smokers tend to have sore throats longer because of the constant irritation of the smoke. Bacterial sore throats start improving within a day or 2 or starting antibiotics.
