Log scales and similar applications of logarithms are not part of calculus, but are a significant topic in pre-calc. Historically, logarithms came first; Newton had ready access to log scale slide rules when he was inventing calculus. However, the natural logarithm and properties of Euler's constant e are topics for calculus, and don't make a lot of sense without it.
