This can be tricky without a wire restring tool. Use your thumb and index finger to squeeze the fabric at the end of the cord and compress it. Then, use a lighter to singe the tip of the cord. This will make it easier to navigate the tiny hole at the end of the cord. Alternatively, you can lay the string on top of the opening and use a paper clip or pencil tip to push the fabric into the opening.
