The best way to cancel an automatic payment is by request to the merchant receiving the payment, then notify your bank that you have "revoked authorization." If push comes to shove, you can request a stop order from your bank on a particular check for a small fee. However, you should be aware that stopping payment will not cancel your contract with the merchant for payment.
