I peeled off the wallpaper down to the bare wall in my older house. The wall is not sheet rock, but is a very porous surface. Do I wash off any residue or can I prime right over the surface?

You should sand and wash away any left-over glue or residue. Be careful, though, that the glue isn't part of the wall rather than reside from the wallpaper.
