It helps to come from a place of understanding where you and your child feel like you can trust one another. If you create good, consistent boundaries without being a tyrant, your child will understand what the expectations are without feeling like they're being controlled. When things get ugly, respond with love and understanding to maintain that connection. The reward for parenting like this comes down the road when they're a teenager, since a teenager is only going to listen if you've fostered that respect and love early on. All of this will make parenting less stressful for you.
