You can use no-heat straightening methods (check out How to Straighten Your Hair Without Heat). Your hair really doesn't need to be pin-straight for space buns; in fact, I think that messier, curlier ones look better. I've seen people with really curly hair make it work without straightening their hair. If it's really difficult to get an even part or get the hair to twist, dry getting it damp.
