If not cleaned up right away, the eggs can get into the soil and survive for months or even years. It may also be helpful to know how long it takes for the eggs in the stool to become infectious. For the commonest type of worm (Toxocara) it takes 10 to 21 days before the eggs become larvae and pose a health risk to humans. That is why it is important to clean up any animal feces in your yard as soon as possible.
