I don't have a sewing machine and tried this by hand but it was obvious that I need practice. In the mean time, could I leave the cut edge unfinished or will it fray when washed?

Yes, it's okay to leave the edges unfinished. Instead of fraying, most t-shirt fabrics will slightly roll along the cut edges.
