Conversion therapy is the practice of attempting to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. As of June 2022, thirteen countries have bans on conversion therapy, seven of these mostly targeting health care professionals: Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, France, Germany, Malta and Taiwan; the other seven: Argentina, Chile, Fiji, Nauru, Samoa, Switzerland, and Uruguay have indirect bans in that diagnoses based solely on sexual orientation or gender identity are banned without specifically banning conversion therapy, although effectively that amounts to a ban as health professionals generally would not engage in therapy without a diagnosis. In addition, some jurisdictions within the United States, Australia, and Spain also ban conversion therapy. In China, India, and South Africa case law has found conversion therapy to be unlawful. Bills banning conversion therapy have been considered in Chile, Ireland, Mexico, Poland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
