  • Immunoglobulins are a specialized group of proteins produced by the plasma cells in response to an antigen and which function as antibodies.

Types of Immunoglobulins:

Immunoglobulins Major Functions
IgG
  • It is the antibody of secondary immune response
  •  It can transverse blood vessels easily.
  • It is the only immunoglobulins that can cross the placenta and transfer the mother's immunity to the developing fetus.
IgA
  • It is secretary IgA
  • Prevents attachment of the bacteria and viruses to the mucous membrane.
  •  It prevents foreign substances from entering the body cells.
  • mostly found in the body secretions such as saliva, tears, sweat milk, and the walls of the intestine.
IgM
  • It is the first antibody to be produced in response to an antigen i.e. primary response.
  • It does not cross the placenta
IgE
  • Mediates immediate hypersensitivity (allergy) by causing the release of mediators from mast cells and basophils upon exposure to antigen (allergen).
  • Main host defense against helminthic infection.
