Concept:

  • Hematemesis -> blood vomiting
  • Tear in the esophagus, excessive vomiting, varices
  • Antibiotics, potassium chloride, NSAID's can also lead to hematemesis

Explanation:

  • While the patient is having hematemesis they need to be diagnosed even for peptic ulcer, esophageal varices, gastritis etc.,
  • Gastritis -> infection and inflammation of gastric mucosa
  • Peptic ulcer -> ulceration of gastric lining
  • Esophageal varices -> enlarged veins in the esophagus

  • NBM -> Nil by mouth where patient will not be allowed to take anything by mouth
  • Solid diet -> diet which comprises of all forms of foods
  • Liquid diet -> includes fruit juice, java, malt, coconut water, buttermilk, glucose and ORS
  • Low fiber diet -> given for IBS, chron disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis
