Option 4 : Potassium chloride

Concept:-

  • Potassium chloride: is a medicine used to prevent or treat low potassium levels in the body. Potassium is a mineral that the body needs for the proper functioning of the heart, muscles, kidneys, nerves, and digestive system.
  • Certain diseases, illnesses, and drugs can remove potassium from the body.
  • IV potassium must never be given by direct IV injection. If it is injected too rapidly or in too high a dose, it may cause cardiac arrest within minutes. The effect of hyperkalemia on the heart is complex – virtually any arrhythmia may be observed.
  • It must always be diluted in infusion fluid (RL or 0.9% sodium chloride). It must never be administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly. MSF provides ampoules of 10 ml of 10% potassium chloride.

Side effects:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • stomach pain
  • the appearance of a potassium chloride tablet in your stool.
