- Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday once again raised the demand to grant national project status to the state's ambitious East Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP).
- The chief minister raised the issue in the meeting of the northern zonal council chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday.
- He also demanded the Centre to create posts for the member from Rajasthan in Bhakra Beas Management Board in the meeting.
- ERCP is an ambitious project of Rs 37,247 crore which will benefit 13 districts of the state, namely Jhalawar, Baran, Kota, Bundi, Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Tonk, Jaipur, Dausa, Karauli, Alwar, Bharatpur, and Dholpur.
- Other demands raised by him included extending the period of GST (Goods and Services Tax) compensation by five years from June 2022 to June 2027, the release of the pending GST compensation of about Rs 5,000 crore to Rajasthan, increase in the number of beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) in the state from 4.46 crore to 5.24 crore.
Bhakra Beas Management Board
- As per the Indus Water Treaty, 1960 signed between India and Pakistan, the waters of three eastern rivers namely the Sutlej, the Beas, and the Ravi were allotted to India for exclusive use.
- A Master Plan was drawn to harness the potential of these rivers for providing assured irrigation, power generation, and flood control. Bhakra and Beas Projects form a major part of the plan and were established as a joint venture of the erstwhile states of Punjab and Rajasthan.
- On the Reorganization of the erstwhile state of Punjab on 1st November 1966, Bhakra Management Board (BMB) was constituted under section 79 of the Punjab Reorganization Act, 1966. The administration, maintenance, and operation of the Bhakra Nangal Project were handed over to Bhakra Management Board w.e.f. 1st October 1967.
