Diversity in classrooms across the nation has continued to increase. But the curriculum delivered in those classrooms doesn’t always follow a pattern. This leaves many students feeling disconnected, disengaged, and disinterested in the educational process which can have serious, lifelong consequences.
- Inclusion implies a radical reform of the school in terms of conviction and philosophy followed by curriculum, assessment, pedagogy, grouping of pupils, and the school environment and ethos.
- It is based on a value system that welcomes, respects, and celebrates diversity arising from culture, gender, nationality, race, language of origin, social background, religion, class and caste, level of educational achievement, disability, etc.
Effective strategies for successful inclusion of students belonging to diverse cultural backgrounds:
- Acknowledge and respect every student as every student brings unique cultural strengths to the classroom.
- Practice cultural sensitivity in the classroom as recognizing and nurturing cultural strengths not only encourages success but also promotes an open-minded, supportive environment that celebrates cultural differences.
- Incorporate diversity in the content of teaching to create a powerful connection between classroom lessons and diverse student backgrounds.
- Practicing culturally responsive pedagogy at every stage of the learning process to design and deliver culturally responsive lessons.
Hence, it is clear that for the successful inclusion of students belonging to diverse cultural backgrounds, giving priority to the experiences of dominant groups should be avoided by the teacher.
