Option 2 : open ended question
The teaching-learning activities of a classroom mainly depend on the actions taken by the teacher. The teacher conducts various activities in a teaching-learning process to facilitate the students' learning experiences.
- The teacher needs to check the performance or the level of learning of students so that the learning can be facilitated in better ways.
- To monitor the learning of students, the teacher keeps assessing the performance of learners by asking them questions about the learned concepts.
- The questions asked by the teacher in a natural classroom setting can be classified mainly into two types: Open-ended questions & Close-ended questions.
Open-ended questions:
- These questions are helpful in assessing the creativity of learners as they are free to share, clarify and put their views.
- These questions may have more than one correct answer. The learners will elaborate their point of view and the teacher will be able to see the things from a learner's perspective.
- Open-ended questions nurture and assess creativity as it:
- requires an answer with a proper explanation.
- promotes divergent thinking, creativity, and ingenuity.
- can't be answered in yes or no and discourages one-word answers.
- give chances to answer an unrestricted amount of conceivable responses.
Hence, it could be concluded that Open-ended questions on a test will be helpful for assessing the creativity of learners.
- Close-ended questions: These questions may generally have one answer and provide limited insight. The respondents respond in limited ways like responding in ‘yes’ or ‘no’, putting the sign ‘correct’ or ‘incorrect’, etc.
- Multiple choice question/one-word question: It allows a learner to choose one answer from a limited list of possible answers. It requires one-word answer thus minimizing the subjective inference and judgment.
- True/false type of question: In this type, a statement is provided to the students and they are required to indicate their choice as to whether the given statement is true or false, correct or incorrect, right or wrong, according to the given instructions.
