- Assessment is a systematic way of collecting information to make a judgment about student learning.
- It is integral to the teaching-learning process which helps in facilitating student learning and improving instruction.
- The assessment provides feedback on the performance of the student specifying his/her strengths and areas for improvement which provides insights for taking appropriate steps for improving the learning.
Following are the tools a teacher uses to assess children's learning:-
- Classroom interaction:- The students, in a group, share their experiences and learn better from each other. The students sharing each other’s experiences and assessments can be more objective when the assessment is based on a shared set of assessment schedules. This assessment can further develop cooperative learning and team skills. The learners can overcome their difficulties easily and do better in their studies.
- Projects:- It is a method that emphasizes the active participation of students by working in a group to complete a specific project. It encourages students to think creatively and assesses their intelligence and their representation.
- Portfolio assessment Portfolio is a collection of students' work representing a selection of performance. It often documents a student's best work. It may also include information such as drafts of his/her work, his/herself assessment of work, and parents' assessment.
- Self-assessment:- It is the ability of a person to accurately evaluate or assess his/her performance, and his/her strengths and weaknesses.
Thus, it is concluded that all the given options are the tools should a teacher use to assess children's learning.
- Internal assessment (Continuous assessment): Internal assessment is the one where the learner and the tutor are directly involved in assessing the progress of student learning. In these assignments, practical activities, contact programs, project work, dissertations, etc. are the means through which internal assessment is made.
- External assessment (Terminal assessment): External assessment refers to the tests conducted by the educational institutions or by an outside agency. External assessment may be terminal assessment and it is usually conducted at the end of the learning period. In such cases, it is also known as summative assessment or term-end assessment.
