Option 3 : Electrolytic reduction

Concept:

The electrolytic reduction method is used for the extraction of highly electropositive metals.

  • In the process of electrolysis, ionic substances are decomposed into simpler substances when an electric current is passed through them.
  • Electricity current is the flow of electrons or ions in any conductor. Example: Na, K, Mg, K, etc are obtained by the electrolytic reduction process.
  • The oxides, hydroxide, and chlorides of metals infused state are electrically reduced by using this method. The metals are extracted at the cathode.
  • Metals that are placed high in the reactivity series are highly electropositive and they cannot be reduced by carbon as a reducing agent.

  • Roasting: It is the process in which ore is converted into its oxide by heating it strongly in excess of air.
  • Carbon Reduction (Smelting) : The reduction of oxide ore with carbon at high temperature is known as Smelting.
