Option 3 : Socialist, Secular

Socialist and secular are the two words added to the Indian constitution by the 42nd amendment.

42nd Constitutional Amendment Act 1976, was enacted during the Emergency (25 June 1975 – 21 March 1977) by the Indian National Congress government headed by Indira Gandhi. This amendment brought about the most widespread changes to the Constitution in its history, and is sometimes called a “Mini-Constitution”. Few important amendments are:

  • Added Fundamental Duties by the citizens (new Part IV A).
  • Four Directive Principles were added viz. Article 39, Article 39A, Article 43A and Article 48A, and were given precedence over fundamental rights.
