  • Also known as protein malnutrition.
  • ​It is seen in infants under the age of 1 year.
  • Symptoms: Pot Belly.
    • Loss of muscle mass.
    • Long-lasting infections.
    • Hair fall and loss of hair colour.
    • Stunt height, and underweight.
    • Anaemia.

Marasmus is caused by a severe deficiency of mostly all the vital nutrients like carbohydrates, protein and lipids.

  • It is seen in children between 6 months to 3 years.
  • Symptoms: Chronic diarrhoea.
    • Stunt growth.
    • Intellectual disability.
