Kwashiorkor is a disease caused due to a deficiency of protein.
- Also known as protein malnutrition.
- It is seen in infants under the age of 1 year.
- Symptoms: Pot Belly.
- Loss of muscle mass.
- Long-lasting infections.
- Hair fall and loss of hair colour.
- Stunt height, and underweight.
- Anaemia.
Marasmus is caused by a severe deficiency of mostly all the vital nutrients like carbohydrates, protein and lipids.
- It is seen in children between 6 months to 3 years.
- Symptoms: Chronic diarrhoea.
- Stunt growth.
- Intellectual disability.
- The gross calorific values of Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats are 4.1 kcal/g, 5.65 kcal/g and 9.45 kcal/g.
- Physiologic values of Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats are 4.0 kcal/g, 4.0 kcal/g and 9.0 kcal/g, respectively.
