The light from an external flash can be really harsh. It can make it really hard to get natural-looking compositions, since you'll have these super dark shadows and bright highlights. With a light umbrella, you set the flash up to bounce off of the surface of the umbrella before it hits your subject, which will soften it up and give your subject a smoother look.

Google Earth no longer accepts nor uses user-generated buildings. The old ones are still available through 3D warehouse, but I don't know there's an option to download a few blocks...
