In general, the more that you can give them a specific topic, the better. If you give them a vague assignment, like "Write about any historical event," they might struggle to get started. However, it can help if you give them a few very specific topics to choose from. If they're still having trouble, use a graphic organizer to come up with a framework for the essay. That can make the assignment more concrete and structured.
