Gesso can be a big help. It works well as a primer for both acrylic and oil paints, and can be used on any surface, including wood and paper. Priming the canvas before you apply oil paint will ensure that the paint adheres well to the canvas. Sanding the gesso will also give it minor scratches and imperfections that allow your oil paint to adhere to it.
