The most handy option would be a piece of sheet metal however tall you'd like; I would recommend at least 8" tall by 20" long. Then, I would bend the ends so they can be hooked together easily (or simply use a metal coffee can) and break pieces of charcoal in half. Leave a little room at the bottom, maybe 1/4" or so for circulation. Your fire will make your charcoal turn white, which indicates that it's ready for use.
