If you live in a region where hard water is your basic source of water, it contains concentrations of calcium and magnesium carbonates. These carbonates populate the water when it passes through limescale deposits. When you boil hard water, these minerals excite and deposits onto the sides of your kettle just like how they would adhere to the inner sides of a pipe.
