Option 3 : If the data given in either statement I or in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Total = 484

To find: Average =?

Statement I

Now, 484/N - (484 + 61)/ (N + 1) = 12

⇒ 484(N + 1) – 545N = 12N(N + 1)

⇒ 484N + 484 – 545N = 12N2 + 12N

⇒ 12N2 + 73N – 484 = 0

Solving, we get N = 4 or – 10.0833

But N can’t be negative or a fraction

∴ N = 4

Average = 484/4 = 121

Thus, statement I provides sufficient data.

Statement II

Now, (484 + 141)/(N + 1) - 484/N = 4

⇒ 625N – 484(N + 1) = 4N(N + 1)

⇒ 625N – 484N – 484 = 4N2 + 4N

⇒ 4N2 – 137N + 484 = 0

Solving, we get N = 4 or 10.0833

But N can’t be a fraction

∴ N = 4

Average = 484/4 = 121

Thus, statement II also provides sufficient data.
