Calculation:

Let the smaller number be x and larger number be y

According to the question,

⇒ 3y = 4x + 3

⇒ y = (4x + 3) × 1/3      …… (1)

According to the question,

⇒ 7x = 5y + 1

⇒ y = (7x – 1) × 1/5      …… (2)

From (1) and (2) we get,

⇒ (4x + 3) × 1/3 = (7x – 1) × 1/5

⇒ 4x/3 + 1 = 7x/5 – 1/5

⇒ 7x/5 – 4x/3 = 1 + 1/5

⇒ (21x – 20x)/15 = 6/5

⇒ x = 15 × 6/5

⇒ x = 18

∴ The smaller number = 18
