Option 1 : 35.75

Given:

The average weight of 40 students of A = 45.5 kg

The average weight of 40 students of B = 44.2 kg

Two students of section A having average weight 48.75 kg were shifted to section B

2 students of section B were shifted to section A

Formula used:

Average = sum of observations/Number of observations

Calculation:

Let the two students of section B be x and y respectively

The average weight of 40 students of A = (40 × 45.5) = 1820

The average weight of 40 students of B = (40 × 44.2) = 1768

Two students of section A having average weight 48.75 kg were shifted to section B = (2 × 48.75) = 97.5

2 students of section B were shifted to section A = 2(x + y)

According to the question

⇒ 1820 – 97.5 + (x + y) = 1768 + 97.5 – (x + y)

⇒ 2(x + y) = 1768 + 97.5 + 97.5 – 1820

⇒ 2(x + y) = (1963 – 1820)

⇒ 2(x + y) = 143

⇒ x + y = 71.5

Now,

The average weight (in kg) of the students who were shifted from section B to section A = (71.5/2)

⇒ 35.75

∴ The required average weight is 35.75
