Give them a paragraph to use as practice, like how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Have them read the paragraph, cover it up, and write down whatever stood out to them about the passage. Then, encourage them to take what they wrote down and rewrite it in their own words, as if they were explaining it to someone.
