Adding fats, or "hard oils" (such as lard, coconut oil, palm oil, etc.) to a soap is necessary to give the soap the required "hardness" and long-lasting properties. Soap created without any fats tends to be too easily dissolved while you use them, and, additionally, have a tendency to turn soft and "mushy" when exposed to water for extended periods of time.
