A train leaves Guwahati at 4:00 pm and reaches NJP at 8:00 pm. Another train leaves NJP at 6:00 pm and reaches Guwahati at 9:30 pm. At what time do the two trains meet each other.

A train leaves Guwahati at 4:00 pm and reaches NJP at 8:00 pm. Another train leaves NJP at 6:00 pm and reaches Guwahati at 9:30 pm. At what time do the two trains meet each other. Correct Answer 8:56 pm

Given:

Time taken by train to reach NJP from Guwahati = 4 h

Time taken by another train to reach Guwahati from NJP = 3.5 h = 7/2 h

Formula used:

Time = Distance/Speed

Concept Used:

Relative Speed = Speed of one object with respect to other object

If two object of Speed V1 and V2, respectively travels in opposite direction, Relative Speed = |V1 + V2|

Calculations:

Let Total distance between Guwahati and NJP be x km

Speed of first train = (x/4) km/h

Speed of second train = (x/3.5) km/h

First train left 2 h earlier, so distance travelled in 2 h = x/4 × 2 = x/2 km

Now, Distance between the trains = x – x/2 = x/2

Relative speed = x/4 + x/3.5 = 15x/28 km/h

Time taken to meet = x/2/(15x/28) = (14/15) h = 56 min

∴ Trains will meet at 8:56 pm

The question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given is sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of mathematics to choose the best possible answer. Train A departs at 9 : 20 am and train B departs at 10 : 50 am and they travel towards each other. After how much amount of time will the trains meet? I) Train A travels with a speed of 10 kmph and the difference between the speed of two trains is 6 kmph and both the trains are 160 km apart. II) Train B travels at a speed greater than Train A which travels with 10 kmph by 6kmph separated by a distance of 160 km.
