Each question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given in the statements are sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of Mathematics to choose the best possible answer. In an election there are three candidates A, B and C.What is the difference between the votes received by A and C if 15% of voters in the city didn't cast their vote? I A got 40% votes and got 7650 less votes than combined votes of B and C. Difference between the votes of B and C is 1850. B got more votes than C. II To win the election a candidate requires 33% of the total eligible votes and A won the election by 450 votes.

II To win the election a candidate requires 33% of the total eligible votes and A won the election by 450 votes. Correct Answer
If the data in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question.

Let the total voters in the election be 100x
15% people didn't cast their vote
∴ Total votes cast = 100x – 15x = 85x
Using statement I
A got 40% votes
Votes recieved by A = (40/100) × 85x = 34x
Combined votes of B and C = 34x + 7650
⇒ B + C = 34x + 7650 ---(i)
⇒ B + C = 51x
x= 7650/17 = 450
B → Votes recieved by B
C → Votes recieved by C
Also, B – C = 1850 ----(ii)
Adding (i) and (ii)
2B = 34x + 9500
⇒ B = 17x + 4750, C = 17x + 2900
∴ A – C = 34x – 17x – 2900 = 17x – 2900 = 4750
Statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question
Using statement II
If the total eligible votes is 100x
To win the election = (33/100) × 100x = 33x
Votes received by A = 33x + 450
Statement ii alone is not sufficient to answer the question
Using statement I and statement II
Votes received by A
⇒ 33x + 450 = 34 x
⇒ x = 450
∴ Difference between the votes received by A and C
⇒ A – C = 17x – 2900 = 17 × 450 – 2900 = 4750
∴ If the data in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question.
