Each question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given in the statements are sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of Mathematics to choose the best possible answer. In a family, there are five members. What is the sum of ages of Bhushan and Harshad, if Abhijeet is father of Harshad and twice his age? I. Varsha is the younger sister of Harshad and Vineeta is wife of Abhijeet. Bhushan is brother in law of Abhijeet the average sum of ages of Abhijeet, Varsha and Vineeta is 37 years. II. Vineeta is elder to Bhushan and the sum of their ages is 71 years. If the ratio of ages of Harshad and Bhushan is 4 ∶ 5.     Correct Answer If the data even in both the statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.

Let the age of Harshad be x

Then, the age of Abhijeet = 2x

Using statement I

The average sum of ages of Abhijeet, Varsha and Vineeta is 37 years

⇒ The sum of ages of Abhijeet, Varsha and Vineeta  = 37 × 3 = 111 yrs

Statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question

Using statement II

The ratio of ages of Harshad and Bhushan is 4 ∶ 5

⇒ Let the age of Harshad and Bhushan be 4x and 5x respectively

∴ Age of Vineeta = 71 – 5x

Statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question

Using statement I and statement II

The sum of ages of Abhijeet, Varsha and Vineeta  = 111 yrs

⇒ 2x + 71 – 5x + y = 111

where y → Age of Varsha

⇒ 71 – 3x + y = 111

∴ Value of x and y cannot be determined

∴ The data even in both the statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.
