The sum of the numbers = 780

Calculation:

Let assume that smaller number = x

And, larger number = y

According to question

60% of x = 40% of y

⇒ x ∶ y = 2 ∶ 3

x + y = 780

⇒ 5 units (2 units +  3 units) = 780

⇒ 1 unit =  780/5 = 156

Smaller number = 2x = 2 × 156 = 312

∴ The value of smaller number is 312.
