In a class of 60 students the average marks scored is 36, but later it was found out that marks of 2 student misread i.e noted 18 but instead the student got 32 marks and marks of one more student is noted as 20 but marks obtained by him is 12. What is the average marks of the class after correction is done? Correct Answer 36.1

Given:

Average marks of the class = 36

Total students in the class = 60

Formula used:

Average = (Sum of value of all the numbers)/(Total numbers)

Calculation:

The initial sum of marks of 60 students = 60 × 36 = 2160

New sum after correction = 2160 - 18 + 32 - 20 + 12 = 2166

New average = 2166/60 = 36.1

∴ The average marks of the class after correction is 36.1.

Shortcut Trick

The new average = 36 + (-18 + 32 - 20 + 12)/60 = 36 + 6/60  = 36.1

∴ The average marks of the class after correction is 36.1.
