Calculation:

Let the original price of the onion be Rs. x

The new price of onion = x - x × 40/100 = 3x/5

According to the question:

(480 × 5)/3x - 480/x = 8

⇒ 3x × 8 = 960

⇒ x = Rs.40

New price = 3x/5 = 3/5 × 40 = Rs. 24

∴ The new and initial price of the onion is Rs. 24 and Rs.40.
