A student got total 430 marks in 5 subjects. How many marks did he get in English? I. His average marks in other four subjects is 84. II. His marks in English is 8 more than his average marks in 5 subjects. Correct Answer The data in statement I alone or in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Let the five subjects be: Hindi, English, math, physics and chemistry.

A student got total 430 marks in five subjects:

 ∴ Hindi + English + math + physics + chemistry = 430                    …(i)

 From statement I:

His average mark in other four subjects is 84.

∴ Average = (Total marks in 4 subjects)/4 = (Hindi + Math + Phy + Chem)/4 = 84

∴ Total marks in Hindi + Math + Phy + Chem = 4 × 84 = 336                    …(ii)

Then marks in English = equation (i) – equation (ii)

Hindi + English + math + physics + chemistry = 430            …(i)

Hindi + math + phy + chem = 336                                             …(ii)

English = 430 – 336 = 94

So we can calculate the marks of English from this statement. Hence, statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question.

From statement II:

His mark in English is 8 more than his average marks in 5 subjects.

First we find average marks in 5 subject.

 ∵ Average = (Total marks in five subjects )/5 = 430/5 = 86

His marks in English is 8 more than his average marks in five subjects

∴ Marks in English = 86 + 8 = 94

So we can calculate the marks of English from this statement. Hence, statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Hence, the data in statement I alone or in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
