A certain number of trucks were required to transport 80 tons of material. However, it was found that the trucks could carry 0.7 ton less weight than estimated and thus 7 new trucks are to be added. Find the number of trucks that were initially planned to be used.

A certain number of trucks were required to transport 80 tons of material. However, it was found that the trucks could carry 0.7 ton less weight than estimated and thus 7 new trucks are to be added. Find the number of trucks that were initially planned to be used. Correct Answer 25

Either solve this question with the help of options or use the below method:

Suppose ‘x’ trucks were initially planned to be used.

∴ Average weight of material per truck = 80/x

Now average weight carried is decreased by 0.7 ton and thus 7 new trucks are added:

∴ 80 = × (x + 7)

⇒ 80 = 80 – 0.7x + 560/x – 4.9

⇒ 0.7x – 560/x + 4.9 = 0

⇒ x – 800/x + 7 = 0

⇒ x2 + 7x – 800 = 0

⇒ (x + 32) (x – 25) = 0

∴ x = 25

∴ Number of trucks that were initially planned to be used = 25
