A man can row at 36 km/hour in still water. In a stream which is flowing at 12 km/hour, it takes him 3 hours to a place and back. How far is the place?  Correct Answer 48 km

Let distance = x km,

Rate upstream = 36 - 12 = 24 km/hr

Rate downstream = 36 + 12 = 48 km/hr.

Time taken upstream = x/24

Time taken downstream = x/48

According to the question

x/24 + x/48 = 3

⇒ 3x/(48) = 3

⇒ x = 48 km.
