A prismatic beam is shown in the figure given below: Consider the following statements: i) The structure is unstable ii) The bending moment is zero at support and internal hinge iii) It is a mechanism iv) It is statically indeterminate Which of the statements are correct? Correct Answer i, ii and iii
1) A simply supported beam is statically determinate.
But here a hinge in there in between so our Ds = - 1.So the structure is statically determinate.
∴ Statement 4 is incorrect.
2) A structure is said to be unstable when either of the horizontal force or vertical force applied on the body, it displaces from original position and may not retrieve back without applying an external force. Since for the given beam, if a vertical force is applied on the internal hinge, it will not retrieve back, the structure is unstable.
∴ Statement 1 is correct
3) The bending moment is always zero at the internal hinge.
∴ Statement 2 is correct.
4) The insertion of plastic hinge in a determinate structure permits an unbounded kinematic displacement, which is called as ‘collapse mechanism’ (or simply mechanism).
∴ Statement 3 is correct.
