In a 60 litre solution of acid and water, the ratio of acid and water is 3 : 7. How much (in litre) acid is to be mixed in the solution so that the ratio of acid and water in the ration of acid and water in the resulting solution is 1 : 2? Correct Answer 3

Total solution = 60

Quantity of acid = 60 × 3/10 = 18

Quantity of water = 60 – 18 = 42

Let quantity of acid added be x litres.

According to the question

⇒ (18 + x)/42 = 1/2

⇒ 36 + 2x = 42

⇒ 2x = 42 – 36

⇒ x = 6/2

⇒ x = 3 litres
